Garage Door Lock Replacement

Keyed cylinder locks secure garage doors that are not operated by a garage door opener. Usually mounted in the center of the garage door, they have bars that enter into door tracks on the interior of the garage door. Through normal use, these loks will weaken and need replacement. It is not a long job but if you are unsure, you can hire the professionals at One Track Garage Door to help. Read on to learn how to replace your garage door lock.

Step By Step Guide

  1. Shut the door of the garage with two vice grips. Place them on the door track above the door roller and then make sure the vices are locked on the track.
  2. Take the pin and remove it from inside the lock handle to the lock shaft in the middle of the door panel. Take a nail and place it over the pin and then grab a hammer and tap the nail until the pin is partly exposed. Then use a pair of pliers to remove the pin from the shaft.
  3. Pull off the inside handle of the shaft and then take the shaft and pull the lock bars. The bars join a plate that goes over the shaft of the lock.
  4. Take a Phillips head screwdriver, and disconnect the deadbolt lock about the shaft by the removal of the four securing screws.
  5. With the same screwdriver remove the two screws securing the outside lock. Pull the lock assembly out the door on the outside.
  6. Get a friend to slide the new outer door lock assembly through the door and hold it steady, You can then secure the lock from the inside with the two aforementioned retaining screws.
  7. Take the new deadbolt lock and place it on the door. Extending through the door is a thin bar from the outer door handle. Position the bar inside the back of the deadbolt and then attach the deadbolt to the door with the four retaining screws.
  8. Take the lockbar and position it through the lock bar guides on each side of the door. Then take the lock bar plate and place it over the lock shaft.
  9. Take the new inner lock handle on the shaft and line up the hole for the retaining pin on the handle and shaft.
  10. Insert the retaining pin into the handle and gently tap the pin with the hammer until the pin is flush with the handle.

Garage Door Replacement Considerations

A new garage door installation usually costs around the same as replacing a garage door and installing a new one. Homeowners can look to pay $500-$2,500 depending on many different factors including:

  • Workmanship: It is best to hire a professional. Although it may seem like a tempting DIY project, if the installation is not done correctly, it can become costly in repair and maintenance costs.
  • Location: The design of your house and where you reside will determine the kind of door you will require and the cost of professional quotes.
  • Materials: You can have your new door made from a vast selection of styles, sizes, shapes, and materials, all of which vary widely in their expense.

Do Styles And Types Impact Garage Door Costs?

There are several types and styles of garage doors available for homeowners to choose from, including:

  • Tilt-up or swing-up doors: These doors are in a solid one-piece design that will swing upward from the floor and pulls into space just below the ceiling.
  • Swing-out doors: These doors open in an outward direction from the center is a similar way to how a gate operates.
  • Sliding Doors: By sliding along a track, these doors open to the side.
  • Sectional doors or roll-up: Roll Up doors are America’s most popular choice in garage doors. They open from the bottom and slide into a track that is attached to the ceiling.

The material a garage door is made from can have a large impact on its total cost. The most expensive doors are those that are custom-made for the homeowner from woods like mahogany, cedar, and hemlock. A very solid cedar or mahogany garage door with additional windows for its top panels can cost $3,500 for an 8’X7′ door or as much as $5,000 for a door measuring 16’x7′.

There are many less expensive alternatives. For example, a wood composite can be painted and vinyl which is resistant to damage from denting and looks great on most homes. A 16’X’7′ wood composite door will cost around $1,200. A similarly sized door made from steel is only $750. The downside is they do dent the most easily and they require the most insulation to regulate the temperature.
